Why diets aren’t sustainable
It’s a well-known fact that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of diets that people try – without success – every year. Unfortunately, the majority of these are what is known as “fad diets” and may even be detrimental to your overall health and wellbeing. Here we take a look at why these fashionable diets should stay out of fashion – forever – and how you can lose weight, and keep it off, for good.
What exactly are “fad diets”?
A fad diet is one that promises quick weight loss results through a diet that is usually unhealthy and unsustainable. These diets are aimed at people who want to lose weight without exercising.
Why diets are not sustainable
It is a fact that, for most people at least, diets are just not sustainable and this could be due to a number of reasons:
- Difficult to retain
The majority of diets centre around reducing calorie intake, eating one food group consistently, and not consuming certain food groups at all. This could be extremely bad for your body, as your body will not get the nutrients it requires. What’s more, once you go back to your normal eating habits, chances are that you will regain all the weight you lost and possibly even more.
- Easy to quit
Probably the easiest thing about a diet is quitting it! Some diets take the fun out of eating by being too restrictive or by making you eat something you really really don’t want to eat. This makes it super easy to throw in the towel and give up on something that was making you miserable.
- Failure to address underlying causes
In today’s age where you are raised to believe you can become anything you want, even model-thin, most people believe the only reason diets fail is because people stop dieting. Sadly, they don’t take into consideration that weight is not always a choice, it can be hereditary or due to medical issues. People who have these issues can’t expect the diets that are rumoured to work to work for them. They will need to lead a special lifestyle to combat their weight issues, but more of this later.
- Unrealistic expectations
Diets create unrealistic expectations, making unsubstantiated weight loss claims and recommending potentially dangerous methods to lose weight. These diet plans are not healthy and won’t help you develop behaviours you need to maintain your weight loss. Instead of depriving your body of the nutrients it needs, feed your body a nutritionally balanced food plan and focus on health and wellbeing instead of weight. You will lose weight as a result of this healthy lifestyle that you can maintain for a lifetime. This is where what is known as “clean eating” comes in to help you develop long-term healthy habits that will lead to long-term success.
Clean eating is the only healthy and sustainable option that will work for losing weight and staying healthy. Clean eating is about eating foods that are as close to their natural form as possible, this means foods that are unprocessed (or at least minimally processed). However, completely avoiding processed foods will be difficult in this urban age we are living in, so the goal is to avoid foods that are overly processed. Basically, anything that is ready to heat or comes in a packet. Extensive research has shown that an eating plan heavy on fruits and vegetables has also been proved to prevent some life-threatening diseases, such as high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Research also links clean eating to healthy weight management.
How to eat clean
There are a number of steps to follow in order to eat clean:
- Eat whole, natural foods and try to avoid overly processed food
- Eat unrefined instead of refined food
- Include protein, carbohydrates and fat in every meal
- Be wary of fat, salt, and sugar
- Eat 5 or 6 small meals a day
- Get active
- Avoid Alcohol
