Are you aware of the mind body connection?

Are you aware of the mind body connection?

Start thinking of your mind and body holistically. Your body is affected by your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, and emotions. Whether they are positive or negative.

On the flip side of the coin, what we do with our bodies, what we eat, whether we exercise or not or get enough sleep can impact our mental state, either negatively or positively.

There is a definite relationship between our minds and bodies.

Many things can affect your thinking negatively:

  • The uncertainty about the future
  • People losing their jobs
  • Divorce
  • Experiencing money problems
  • Children leaving home
  • Death of a loved one

This all has an influence on the mind, and this can affect our bodies. The mind is very powerful and can play a role in how some illnesses manifests in the body.

Your brain produces substances which includes endorphins which are natural pain killers and can strengthen your immune system. What your brain produces depends in part on your thoughts, feelings, and expectations. Negative thoughts and emotions can keep your brain from producing some of the chemicals that help your body heal.

Stress is good if you are in a fight or flight mode and is necessary to help you avoid an accident or life-threatening situation. But if you constantly are in the fight or flight mode or feel you are not in control of your life, this starts to affect you negatively and can affect your emotions. You feel tense, upset, or depressed.

Your body responds to the way you think feel and act. If you are constantly stressed your body will tell you that something is wrong, you develop high blood pressure or a stomach ulcer.

It is important to take care of your body. Have regular check-ups, eat healthy meals, exercise to relieve tension that has built up, get enough sleep. Focus on a healthy lifestyle.

When you relax your mind and body, your body stops producing the hormones that creates stress. The feelings of stress eases and your mind and body returns to a state of calm. Live a balanced life and become aware of what you are thinking. Change the negative thoughts to positive ones. Look around each day and see what is good and beautiful.

Ways to relax the mind and body could include:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Take up yoga or pilates
  • Do meditations
  • Go for family walks
  • Spend time playing with your children
  • Take the time to communicate with your spouse
  • Listen to music
